Meet the new video channel from The Manchester Pain Clinic, bringing expert pain management advice closer to you.

When you are living with persistent pain, questions are inevitable. Why does my back still hurt? What causes nerve pain? Could an injection help? When should I see a pain specialist? And what treatment options are actually available?

Finding reliable answers online can be difficult. With so much conflicting information, it is not always easy to know what applies to your condition or where to turn for professional advice.

That is why The Manchester Pain Clinic has introduced its new 'Ask the Expert' video channel, bringing specialist knowledge, practical advice and trusted insights directly to patients, their families and healthcare professionals.

Led by Consultant in Pain Medicine Mr Jonathan Rajan, the channel is designed to make understanding pain and its treatment options easier, more accessible and less daunting.

Expert advice, explained simply

Pain medicine is a specialist area of healthcare, and understanding the different causes and treatments can sometimes feel overwhelming. Our new video channel aims to change that.

Through a growing collection of short, informative videos, Mr Rajan and The Manchester Pain Clinic explore some of the most common questions patients ask about chronic pain, explaining complex medical subjects in a clear, accessible and straightforward way.

From understanding why pain develops to exploring the latest approaches to specialist treatment, the videos provide an opportunity to learn directly from experienced pain medicine professionals.

Topics include:

  • Chronic back and neck pain.

  • Sciatica and nerve pain.

  • Fibromyalgia and widespread pain.

  • Arthritis and joint pain.

  • Pain injections and nerve blocks.

  • Radiofrequency treatment.

  • Persistent pain following an injury.

  • When to seek advice from a pain specialist.

Whether you have recently started experiencing pain or have been managing a long-term condition for several years, the channel offers useful information to help you better understand your symptoms and potential treatment options.

What will you discover?

The channel features a growing library of videos covering the questions that matter most to patients.

Here are just a few of the subjects already available:

  1. What to expect with a pain injection

Considering an injection but unsure what happens during the procedure? Find out what to expect before, during and after treatment.

  2. When should I see a pain specialist?

Discover when persistent pain may benefit from specialist assessment and what a Consultant in Pain Medicine can offer.

  3. What treatments are available for chronic pain?

Explore the different approaches to pain management, from medication and physiotherapy to specialist injections and nerve blocks.

  4. Why does pain continue after an injury has healed?

Understand how the nervous system can contribute to persistent pain and why symptoms sometimes continue beyond the original injury.

  5. What's the difference between medical and interventional pain management?

Learn how medication-based approaches and targeted procedures can work together as part of a personalised treatment plan.

  6. Can pain medicine help avoid the need for surgery?

Explore how specialist pain treatments may help manage symptoms, improve function and, in selected cases, reduce the need for surgical intervention.

These are just some of the topics covered, with more expert insights being added to the channel.

Meet the expert behind the advice

The channel is led by Mr Jonathan Rajan, Consultant in Pain Medicine and the lead consultant at The Manchester Pain Clinic. With extensive experience in NHS and private practice, Mr Rajan specialises in assessing and managing a wide range of acute and chronic pain conditions.

His clinical interests include spinal pain, nerve-related pain, complex pain conditions and minimally invasive interventional treatments. He also has extensive experience in procedures such as radiofrequency denervation, nerve root blocks and epidural injections. Importantly, his approach is centred on understanding each patient's individual circumstances, explaining treatment options clearly and helping people make informed decisions about their care.

Through the Ask the Expert channel, that same commitment to clear communication and patient education is being extended beyond the consultation room.

Why patient education matters

Understanding pain is an important part of managing it. Patients who have a better understanding of their condition and available treatments are often better placed to have informed conversations with their healthcare professionals and make decisions about their care.

We also recognise that not everyone is ready to arrange a consultation immediately. Sometimes, the first step is simply finding out more, understanding what might be happening and learning what options are available.

Our video channel provides an accessible starting point, helping to answer common questions and remove some of the uncertainty surrounding pain management.

It is also a valuable resource for family members, carers and healthcare professionals who want to develop a better understanding of persistent pain and the treatments available.
